Nürnberg Toy Fair – Spielwarenmesse 2013 (Norev)

For those who had the opportunity to attend this “party” for Die Cast collectible fans (and the other hobby enthusiasts that filled the 17 halls of the Nuremberg exhibition Center) the feeling of first arriving in the city was rather pleasant. We were met with “warm” weather (slightly over 0ºC) which was a relief considering last year’s temps that hovered around -12ºC.

The atmosphere of the fair is very intense given the large public attendance that is guaranteed year to year due to the large number of manufacturers displaying their products. Some of the products are already available on the market, others are in prototype phases with launch dates (subject to change) scheduled for later in the year, and some are still being diecast (although we didn’t see many this year.) In this series of articles, beginning with this first one, we are going to briefly describe some of the manufacturers and new that most caught our attention. There were so many that we surely won’t have time to relate all we saw.

We begin with Norev, the famed Gallic manufacturer, whose designs from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s are owned by nearly every veteran collector. The house started making miniature cars in 1953, making this year its 60th anniversary.

Starting with 1/43 scale, this year we saw a huge quantity of concepts on display. Some had already been shown at past fairs like the Renault DeZir, Paris Salon 2010, which we saw in 2011. This Renault model was made by Provence Moulage, who also produced the 1953 Horch 830BL that was also on display. A few new concepts we got to see were the Peugeot Concept Car Onyx, Paris Salon 2012, and the Citroen Num 9 Concept 2012.

This year there were a number of interesting announcements in 1/43 like the Citroen DS5 2012 presidential, 2012 C6, 1995 XM, 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS, 2012 Peugeot 208 GTI, 2012 Alpine Renault A110-50, many more.

Among the models presented in 1/18 was a prototype 1970 Citroen Break 21 that was announced in 2012 and will likely be released this year. In addition we were able to see the 2012 Citroen DS3 Racing Sébastien Loeb (which is among the developments announced for this year.) Also likely to see the light this year are the 2009 Audi A5 Cabriolet, 2010 Lexus LS460, 2012 Shooting Break, 2013 Peugeot RCZ, 2012 Peugeot Onyx Concept Car and various other Le Mans (2011 Aston Martin LMP1, 2011 Peugeot 908 HDI FAP) and WRC models (2012 Portuguese Citroen DS3 WRC Rally, 2012 French Citroen DS3 WRC Rally.)
